restore & resize old wedding ring?

Tuesday Sep 29, 2009

I would like to take the beautiful antique diamond ring, that was passed down to me by my grandmother, to have it altered. It is worn on the palm side and very fragile. It is also too large in diameter to fit my ring finger. Who am I looking for to do this - a jewelery store? Diamond store? Any scams I should be aware of?

I recommend a private jeweler. The big chain stores in the mall usually send their items off, so you have no idea how long it will take or the condition it will come back in. They will also charge a bit more to cover their costs, the price of the jeweler who does the work, plus a profit. A private jeweler that has their own equipment can do it in-house, and you don’t have the worry of additional costs added on.
Look in the yellow pages to find independent jewelers near you. Then call them to ask if they do work in-house, or if they send it off. Inquire about insurance, bonding, and other concerns. Tell them what you have, and what you want done. If they are any good, they can tell you over the phone if they work with antique jewelery or not. The ones that think they can do something with it will tell you to bring it in. Take it to as many shops as you can to get estimates, then pick the one in the middle, not the highest or lowest.

No wedding band Traditional , non-traditional what do you think?

Tuesday Sep 29, 2009

I recently after 4 years of marriage, replaced my wedding wrap (solitare enhancer) and my engagment ring with a Antique leaf design, filigree and milgrain worth $2000 and .30 carats, yet I have a solitare 1.25 ct., I don’t wear a typical wedding band as the jeweler use to always ask if I wanted the rings combined, sautered together. I am just asking because a few of my girlfriends commented on why aren’t you wearing your wedding band? I said because I am using this one as such. How many women (husbands/family and friends can answer for the wives as well) still wear you engagment ring or what is your moral of it all?

In your job, I think you have done the right thing. That is one reason why I would never recommend getting rings souldered together….and why I wouldnt choose a set with a wrap. I am choosing a band style ring that looks nice on it’s own because there are times when an engagement ring is not appropriate to wear….delivering babies would be one of them times, even changing a nappy, because babies can be scratched with big solitaire rings. Gardening and baking can also be hard to do while wearing a big ring.

I wouldn’t be telling anyone anything. If someone is insistent on knowing, just tell them the truth, that your other rings were inconveinient, the wrap looked odd on it’s own so your hubby upgraded and THIS is your new wedding band.

Antique ring. Would it decrease the value of this antique by replacing the missing stone?

Tuesday Sep 29, 2009

I have recently inherited a filigree engagement ring and wedding band from 1929/1930 (the wedding band is inscribed 11/1930… so I assume the engagement ring is older). It was my great grandmother’s. Ive yet to have it appraised because I have no intentions of selling it; I would love to keep it in the family. The ring is set with one center stone, and two small stones on each side. One of the smaller stones on the side is missing…

Would it decrease the value of this antique by replacing the stone?

(While I have no intentions of selling it, I would like to preserve it as best as possible)

My sense from years of watching ‘Antiques Roadshow’ is that the value loss happened when the stone was lost, and that if it’s replaced with one which matches in the ‘4 Cs’ - color, cut, clarity, and carat (weight) - some or even most of the value actually will be restored.
Look for a jeweler who does conservation or restoration work, not just making or selling jewelry - they’re not the same thing. I assume that the fact that a stone was lost means that SOME kind of repair to the setting will be necessary, and that needs to be in keeping with the original work.
Even though you have no intention of selling, you might still want to consider an appraisal - your insurance company would probably require one if, heaven forbid, you had to file a claim for loss of the piece. A good appraiser can often offer guidance on making repairs, too. There’s a link to appraisers on the Roadshow’s website, along with a lot of other useful info.

Good luck, and enjoy your wonderful heirloom.

I have had sterling silver cz before. And, though real diamonds are beautiful, in my opinion when something this cheap can still look gorgeous, I’d buy it. I just love rings like these. So, which one do you like the most?
Ring 5 (forgot this one)

Yes, I am a typical girl. I like many different types of rings but for this certain occassion (wedding sets etc) I like these.. But it’s hard to pick when their ALL so cute. The set I have now looked like $1000 when I got it. Just as these do in their pictures. So thanks for all the answers!

The 4th one is my favorite!!! I love the style of it and its very pretty for only $30.00 dollars! And its not over the top its perfect! =]

Where can I find a wedding band to match vintage engagement ring?

Tuesday Sep 29, 2009

My engagement ring is nearly 100 years old and I’m having a hard time finding a wedding band that matches.
It is a thin band that dovetails toward a solitaire 1/2ct round diamond. There is a small engraved pattern on each side of the diamond surrounded by mill grain.
Hope you can visualize it from my description.

Why not talk to a jeweler and see if someone can make you a matching ring.

I think the extra expense might be worth it to you.

Last Dance/Recap - Bryan and Tracy's Wedding

Monday Sep 28, 2009

The last dance of the evening offers a fitting time for recalling the events of the wedding day. Live action footage of the bride and groom is interspersed with flashbacks of big moments from the day. The whole segment is wrapped up with the bride and groom saying goodbye to their guests.
On the technical side, this clip is an example of how important it is to capture an entirely separate audio track that's independent of the camera. This not only ures the highest fidelity sound but allows us much greater flexibility in mixing shots together during post.
